What can you do when your jumper shrinks? Top-tip for Recycling an old woollen jumper…

My mum had a favourite jumper that she used to wear and wear and wear. Don’t get me wrong, she did wear other items in-between wearings, but I will forever remember this jumper whenever I think of my mum. So imagine how she felt one day when the washing machine was set just a little too high and the jumper came out at least two sizes smaller – she thinks perhaps one of the grandchildren turned the dial when she wasn’t looking! She asked me if there was anything we could do but alas, despite ‘googling’ it, I found there was nothing to be done!

I told her I’d take the jumper as it was wool, and neither she nor I like waste. Well, that was some years ago, but whilst sorting through my fabrics the other day I happened to come across the said jumper and it made me feel sad that something that was once loved so much was now at the back of a cupboard. So I took it out and decided to wash it again, this time purposefully on a HOT wash, to felt it. It came out fairly well felted (matted), but you could still see the knit which was exactly what I wanted it to do.

I pondered, what should I do with it? A cushion? A bag?

Then, one day last week I wanted a brooch or corsage to go on my lovely Boden velvet coat, but I couldn’t find the ‘right’ brooch.

*BING* an idea!

I got my sewing machine and buttons out, and a brooch pin. Just a little while later I had made this…

Well, actually I made two… one for my mum, to remind her of her jumper!

I

I think I’m going to make a few for a show I have coming up this weekend…

I think they make rather a nice gift in a box, don’t you?

I’m so pleased neither of us wanted to throw that jumper away!

If you like these, and would like to make one yourself, I would be happy to post the instructions and a pattern on this blog, just let me know! If enough people want one I’ll produce a PDF pattern.

Have a great day!
